ARTIST STATEMENT

In 2020, I released eight piano improvisations, Rumors of War, a reclamation of self after a 25-year upbringing in a religious cult to which I lost my family and community. From those years came a series of initiations toward a private, personal spirituality cultivated through improvisation, a lifelong practice which evolved to writing and gestural art. The album artwork - a circle juxtaposed with a square – began a visual expression of long-held relationship with non-duality guided by physics and relativity. These were teachers and rational medicines for my inherited patterns, neurodivergence and addiction to black and white certainty.

In 2021, my health collapsed from the years of survival and illness, and I surrendered to a life of full-time recovery. From this Fall came the work you now see. The drawings were early hand-movement practices; the photographs, portals to healing worlds; the hanging sculptures, a computation of balance and non-dualist application; the procedural art, re-interpretive studies of myself. The first to be shown was Movement, Demos from Rigidity & Recovery – a sparse collection of piano improvisations from this time. Altogether, a journal of recovery.

My intent is to show my chronology of healing, expression, and inner strength, as well as artistic development – an evolution from survivorship to vitality, beauty and being. As I piece together my story, I hope you catch a glimpse of your own. I hope that whatever you fear as dark becomes brighter, more curious, more wondrous. I hope you find within yourself a deep and unshakable home.

First the fall
then the recovery from the fall
both are the grace of God
