Piano Instruction is one pathway within my broader practice. For my full approach and philosophy, see Psychosomatic Music.

As a young teacher, I noticed how differently children learned from adults, and how little traditional training accounted for that. Perfectionism and pressure create lifelong patterns that lead most students to abandon music altogether, only to regret quitting in adulthood.

I was a resistant student myself. Over the years, I’ve built a contemporary approach adapting somatic, improvisational, and contemplative practices to support music as a foundation for psychological development, creative ability, and mind-body health.

I prioritize personal connection to music as the inspiration for passionate practice. No person is past recovery! I've helped many adults return to their childhood love for music.

FAQ
What's a first lesson like?

A first lesson is all about the introduction to the instrument as a new friend. I encourage self-guided exploration, getting acquainted with this behemoth of an instrument the piano is. As they settle in, I teach them more about what they're discovering, and finally, we begin to build some fundamental concepts.

How long are lessons?

For younger students, I recommend half-hour sessions. For older, a full hour. This is an important anchor in your child's week to reset, connect to themselves, and develop their musical practice.

What if my child loses interest?

I have no desire to force a student into something they are not choosing. However, it is important that even when they are choosing, there can come resistance. This is why I focus on a connection to themselves through the instrument. There are also the conversations that need to be had with parents — are the parents present in this process, are they forcing the child, or are they disengaged entirely? In terms of slam-dunk methodology... there are a lot of sensory practices and attention-shifting tricks to employ.

What about advanced students?

I teach a hybrid of classical technique and improvisation in an integrated model. I focus on whichever is out of balance. Advanced students require a much more custom approach depending on their current track.

How much practice is expected?

Daily practice is ideal, even if short. I teach students how and why to practice, not just what to practice. The why is very important, and different for each person. For younger students, I work with parents to set up a sustainable routine.

Does my child need a piano at home?

Yes, a full-size digital piano with weighted keys is a good starting point. I'm happy to help with budget recommendations. I highly recommend an acoustic piano when accessible.

In-person or virtual?

In-person lessons are at my studio or partner studios around Los Angeles. In-home travel can be arranged. Virtual lessons available.

What commitment is required?

Our first session is commitment-free. If you're interested in continuing, we commit to a quarterly lesson plan.
